‘Globalization’ as a term, is defined by many people
in many different ways. As for Wikipedia Globalization is the process of
international integration arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture. In simple, the term ‘Consumer’
means, A
person who purchases goods and services for personal use. So are Sri Lankans consumers globalized? Lets figure it out.
The
use of Internet has drastically increased in last few decades in Sri Lanka. This
sometimes can be a result of FaceBook as it is said that FB is the most visited
site in past. Hence, have influenced people to engage in many other social media
networks such as Twitter, Youtube, Google+, Instragam etc etc. The penetration of Internet
is not just centralized in urban areas but in many other rural areas as well. The
use of Skype for communication purpose has become a huge threat to
telecommunication industry that has made them reduce IDD call charges day by
day. Backed up more for this fact the high use of smart phones, tabs etc have
made the communication almost free and easy, therefore Srilankans are in fact
exposed globally. The sophisticated high technology 3G/4G services in Lanka
have given the scope for global growth. With the result of open economy,
Imports/Exports and significant number of global company operations in SL have
made the platform to become a global consumer by getting the opportunity to use
internationally recognized brands. Moreover the penetration of satellite/cable
TV gives the awareness of the global market in day today terms.
Going
back to the usage of Internet in Sri Lankan context ‘Online Shopping’ takes a
high rank. Sites such as Ebay, Amazon, Kapruka has become very popular and most
visited among Lankans which justify how globalized Sri Lankan consumers are. Furthermore, this has result to high use of global courier services such as DHL, FedEx, TNT strengthen
to more data how Sri Lankan ways have changed from traditional to modern. The popularity
of E-Banking service is another fact that validates the tendency toward being
global.
